Slew of bills to be tabled during Budget session

New Delhi: A slew of Bills including one for setting up an equal opportunity commission and another on checking corruption in the judiciary and for ensuring accountability among judges will be tabled during the Budget session of Parliament beginning Monday. A Bill to streamline functioning of Wakf Boards across the country, the Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India Bill and another to check malpractices in educational institutes will also be introduced during the three month-long session. Equal Opportunity Commission Bill seeks to lift the disadvantage classes in all sections including Muslims by prescribing diversity index for public and private sector. If passed, the Judges Standards and Accountability Bill would check corruption in the judiciary and ensure accountability among the judges. Prohibition of Unfair Practices in Technical Education Institutions, Medical Educational Institutions & Universities Bill, which aims at checking malpractices in educational institutes, seeks to consider such practices as criminal or civil offences depending on the nature of the crime. According to the Bill, charging capitation fee or failure of educational institutes to keep promises could attract imprisonment up to three years for guilty administrators or a fine up to Rs 50 lakh for the institute. Waqf Bill, which seeks to amend the Wakf Act, 1995, would give more teeth to Central Wakf Council. The council acts as an intermediary body between the Centre and 29 Wakf Boards in the states, which take care of public properties of minority community including madrassas and mosques. The National Road Safety and Traffic Management Bill which seeks to ensure road safety will also be tabled.
