Verdict a joke, not acceptable to Muslims: Imam

NEW DELHI: Just a day after the Ayodhya verdict, two friends — Marut Pandey and Mohammad Shams Perwez — came together, symbolizing the idea of unity, and offered Friday prayers at the Khalilullah mosque. Pandey and Perwez are not exceptions, but among thousands of Indians who want to forget the past and move on. At Jamia Nagar, at least, most youths say Ayodhya 1992 is history and India's unity is more precious than bloodshed over a piece of land. ''The burden of Ayodhya is too much and all of us are tired,'' said Srijit Mullick, a Hindu who accompanied his friend, Abu Basher, to a mosque. ''I hail from Murshidabad in West Bengal where this a common practice. Basher will go with me later this month to Durga Puja.'' As people gathered at the Khalilullah's courtyard, which is just a few metres away from L-18, Batla House, where an encounter took place in September 2008, the mood was sombre. ''Have you noticed the reaction of the present generation? It doesn't matter to us anymore. The verdict attempted at reconciliation and I hope it does that for both the community,'' said Pandey. Added Perwez: ''We have moved on and we don't want to have another incident where 2,000 more Muslims and Hindus are killed in the name of religion. Ayodhya don't have a super-speciality hospital or an institute of higher learning. I wish all the parties come forward to donate the land for such a cause. Even without Babri Masjid and Ram Mandir people of India were offering namaz and worshipping Lord Ram.'' Addressing the devotees, head of the Khalilullah mosque in his speech asked Muslims to remember ''God have made human being the most intelligent and we should act accordingly.'' ''If we have to complain, we have to lodge that to the all mighty and wait for his justice. As Indian's we should preserve our nation's integrity and unity,'' he said. At the Fatehpuri mosque in Shaheen Bagh, the Friday speech was all about ''live and let live.''
