Chargesheeted may be barred from polls: Moily

NEW DELHI: A consensus to debar chargesheeted candidates from contesting elections emerged during regional consultations on electoral reforms, law minister Veerappa Moily told TOI on Thursday. We have held seven rounds of regional consultations on electoral reforms across the country and there was an overwhelming consensus on debarring criminal case chargesheeted candidates from contesting elections, Moily said. Pending national consultation on electoral reforms, Moily said the broad consensus on this issue needed to be discussed further as it could require certain riders before recommendations could be made to the Union government. At present, under the Representation of People Act, only persons convicted by a trial court and sentenced to more than two years imprisonment are debarred from elections for a period of six years, which commences from the date of completion of the prison term.
