M F Husain buried in Surrey, govt offer rejected

LONDON: Maqbool Fida Husain was laid to rest at Brookwood cemetery at Woking in Surrey, south of London on Friday afternoon. As a black Mercedes hearse pulled in with his mortal remains, the artists family followed in a Rolls Royce. After the exiled artists family members declined the offer of flying his body back to the country for the last rites, the Indian government sent high commissioner Nalin Surie to lay a wreath on its behalf. Husains four sons and two daughters did consider Indias suggestion, but finally complied with their fathers wish to be buried wherever he died. Besides around 50 mourners, London-based Indian businessmen Lakshmi Mittal and Gopi Hinduja attended the funeral. On an afternoon of sharp showers interspersed by bright sunshine, Maqbool Fida Husains body was lowered into the ground at Brookwood cemetery in Woking, Surrey, south of London. The remains arrived in a wooden coffin in a gleaming, black Mercedes hearse; family members followed in a Rolls Royce.
