FDI in retail: Pranab to brief Congress MPs on govts policy

NEW DELHI: The row over FDI in retail is likely to disrupt the proceedings of Parliament again on Wednesday. With Prime Minister Manmohan Singh putting up a strong defence of FDI, the chances of government reversing its decision seems unlikely. The opposition has made it clear that it will not allow the Parliament to function till the government takes back its decision. Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj has declared that the demand for a discussion through an adjournment motion which entails voting on the issue is non-negotiable. According to Times Now, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has called for a parliamentary party meeting to end divisions within the party on the issue and decide strategy to end the logjam. What has complicated matters for the Congress is the open opposition to FDI by some of its leaders. Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee has called a meeting of party MPs to try and allay their apprehensions over FDI in retail. On Tuesday, former Union minister and Congress MP from Uttar Pradesh Sanjay Singh attacked the decision saying it would hurt the poor and the timing of the move was not right. Kerala PCC Chief Ramesh Chennithala has already written a letter to Prime Minister opposing the decision. He has also requested Kerala chief minister Oomen Chandy not to implement the decision in the state.
