Probe ordered into 50ft wall around Ambani building

MUMBAI: The BEST committee has ordered an investigation to determine how a 50-foot boundary wall was built around Antilla — industrialist Mukesh Ambani's new 27-storey home on Cumballa Hill — without seeking its permission. Committee member Suhas Samant of the Shiv Sena pointed out that there was a five-foot wall separating Antilla from the neighbouring BEST plot, which houses staff quarters. ''This wall was demolished and a new one raised without seeking our permission,'' he alleged in the committee meeting. He also claimed that there was a proposal to construct a telecom tower atop one of the BEST buildings in the vicinity. ''I have got information that this telecom tower is meant exclusively for Antilla. Has permission been sought for this tower or the boundary wall? There should be a detailed inquiry,'' he said. BEST general manager Om Prakash Gupta, who was present at the meeting on Tuesday, said he was not aware of the wall or the proposed telecom tower. ''Since the matter has been raised by committee members, I will direct my officials to conduct a detailed probe and submit a report at the earliest,'' he said. Meanwhile, sources close to Reliance Industries told TOI that ''all relevant permissions had been sought to construct the boundary wall and there was no illegality involved''. They also maintained there was no plan to construct a telecom tower atop any BEST building in the vicinity.
