BCCI wary of pursuing further legal action against RR, KXIP

MUMBAI/NEW DELHI: Faced with twin setbacks in the high court over the participation of Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab in IPL 4, the Board of Control for Cricket in India appears split down the middle over whether to pursue these legal battles further and risk more dents in the tournament's brand image. Ahead of Saturday's all-important working committee meeting, there are indications some of the members are not in favour of approaching the Supreme Court over the issue. Instead, they feel finalizing the event's format and clearing the decks for player auctions should take top priority. At the same time, there are those who feel the board should go to any lengths possible to keep Kings XI and Rajasthan Royals out of the fray. The issue of whether to pursue the matter in court against RR and KXIP is expected to take top priority in Saturday's meeting. Considering that the Bombay high court has dismissed the board's stand in both cases, the BCCI is wary of being snubbed once again, this time by the apex court, and so will tread the legal path with utmost caution. Those board members who are keen to leave the legal issues behind are of the view that not finalising the IPL 4 format and further delaying player auctions could have a direct bearing on several logistical and scheduling issues, and even an impact on profit-sharing margins. The BCCI expects to take a final call on the next step by Saturday. Kings XI have been given a Jan 3 deadline to provide guarantee from a nationalised bank, while the Royals have been handed a Jan 5 cut-off date. If the franchisees - either or both - fail to submit their guarantees in time, they will be disqualified. "Let them pay first and then we will see. But there are strong indications that the board may not drag this matter to the Supreme Court," a top BCCI official told TOI on Friday.
