All in family: More fathers donate sperms to sons AHMEDABAD: Dr Shailesh Patel, a senior gynaecologist, is the biological father of his grandson! It was a choice the family made when his son, Rahul, a software engineer in the US, was diagnosed with azoospermia where he produced no sperms. Doctors said donor sperms would have to be used to use in vitro fertilization. Instead of taking sperms which would pass on traits of a stranger, we decided to use genetic material which would allow the child to inherit family genes. It helps that the grandchild has eyes, complexion and intelligence of the family, Patel said. To carry forward the family lineage, many fathers-inlaw donate sperms if their son is infertile. In some instances, the brother-in-law has donated his sperm. While most want it to be a discreet donation to avoid emotional family drama, there are many cases where the families discuss the issue openly. Such donations have also found mention in the draft Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Bill. Dr Manish Banker, a member of the draft committee for the Bill, says it will soon be illegal to use a known donor and could invite punishment of up to three years jail. Egg and sperm donations will have to come from unknown donors only according to the ART Bill, pending in Parliament, he said. IVF expert Dr Falguni Bavishi has even had instances where fathers-in-laws have met her without the son and daughter-in-law, requesting her to use his sperm and not inform the rest of the family. We do not entertain such requests, she says. We have a policy that both man and woman should know the identity of afamily donor. Well-known surrogacy expert Dr Naina Patel, says not just looks, some families insists that their next generation inherit the same intelligence. A senior educationist, whose son was infertile, wanted to avoid an unknown donor so that the grandchild inherited the gene of higher learning, she said. Back |
