Book fair rakes in Rs.1.5 crore THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Books costing Rs.1.5 crore were sold at the third Thiruvananthapuram Book Fair that came to a close on Monday. The highest numbers of books were sold on the closing day when the fair’s 150 stalls witnessed a heavy rush of bibliophiles. The Kerala Sasthra Sahitya Parishad’s play ‘Galileo’ marked the conclusion of the 11-day fair which was organised in association with the Frankfurt Book Fair. As many as 100 publishers took part in the fair. Books were sold at discounts ranging from 10 to 60 per cent. Apart from books, there was also great demand for CDs for children. In 2010, the fair would see greater participation of international publishers, a press note issued here said quoting Rubin D’Cruz, director of the Kerala State Institute of Children’s Literature. Ten books in Malayalam were given prizes at the fair that was also organised as part of the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival. For the first time, publishers got an opportunity to interact and exchange ideas about copyright trading. As part of the fair, ‘Nalekkoottam,’ a coming together of 100 students who shared their thoughts about the future with noted persons, was also organised. On the closing day, the book ‘Discovering India From Indian Cinema’ was given a prize by Chairman of the Kerala State Chalachithra Academy K.R. Mohanan. The prize was presented to its author G.P. Ramachandran The German Book Office, the Alliance Francaise and the American Library registered their presence at the fair which saw the participation of the Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Penguin, Sage, Pearson, Scholastic, Routledge, Orient Blackswan, Tulika and the National Book Trust.
