Maharashtra tops fake note haul with 85% of total seizure

NEW DELHI: Maharashtra has reported nearly 85% of the total seizure of fake Indian currency notes in the country this year. Government on Tuesday informed the Lok Sabha that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and state police had recovered fake Indian currency notes (FICN) worth over Rs 81 crore in Maharashtra out of total Rs 96 crore till October. West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat are the others states, where FICN were seized in substantial number. The face value of such counterfeit notes in these states is, however, quite low as compared to Maharashtra. In terms of FICN-related cases too, Maharashtra is at the top, having registered 212 FIRs for probe as compared to 114 in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat (113), Andhra Pradesh (98) and West Bengal (72). In written response to a Parliament question, the home ministry informed the Lower House that several agencies such as RBI, ministry of finance, CBI and security and intelligence agencies were working in tandem to thwart the illegal activities related to FICN. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been empowered to investigate and prosecute such offences. The government has also constituted a terror funding and fake currency Cell within the NIA t focus on investigation of terror funding, said the ministry.
