Cops zero in on Amar Singh in cash-for-vote probe

NEW DELHI: The home ministry on Wednesday told Delhi Police that it was free to question former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh and BJP MP Ashok Argal in connection with the investigation into the cash-for-vote scam which led to the arrest of Suhail Hindustani. Hindustani, the alleged liaison between those trying to help the government win the July 2008 trust vote and the three BJP MPs whose votes were sought to be purchased, was arrested after seven hours of questioning by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police. He has denied being a middleman, and claimed he was a whistleblower who played along with Amar Singh and Congress leaders who were allegedly shopping for MPs in order to expose the bribery. Hindustani is the second person after Sanjeev Saxena, allegedly an Amar Singh aide, to be arrested since the Supreme Court rebuked police for their shoddy probe into allegations that the Manmohan Singh government bought votes to tide over the trust vote. His arrest shows besides the charge of bribery, cops are focused on those who facilitated the bribe to BJP MPs if only, as they claim, to help a sting operation. Turns here Hindustani said he, along with Sudheendra Kulkarni, a former aide of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L K Advani, kept quiet about the deal offered to three BJP MPs as part of a sting operation. Police plan to question Kulkarni too.
