Lokpal panel in logjam as Anna, govt refuse to budge

NEW DELHI: Government and civil society members on Wednesday hit a logjam with each side digging in its heels and expressing strong fundamental differences on the structure and scope of the Lokpal bill. After a 2-1/2 hour meeting in North Block intended to draft the bill, the two sides left glum-faced but agreed to meet again on June 20 and 21. If no consensus is arrived then we will forward a draft bill with both versions so that the Cabinet can take a view, said Union human resource development minister Kapil Sibal, a clear indication that the chasm was now unlikely to be bridged. Coming out of the meeting, which, sources said was fairly acrimonious, Sibal said the drafting process would be completed by June 30. The contentious issue of bringing the Prime Minister and the higher judiciary under the Lokpals purview was not discussed in the meeting.
