Harmony Centre to come up near disputed site in Ayodhya

Faizabad: Amid efforts to find an amicable solution to the Ramjanmabhoom-Babri Masjid issue, plans are afoot to set up an 'All-Religion Harmony Centre' near the disputed site in Ayodhya. Social activists Swami Agnivesh, Asghar Ali Engineer, and senior Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan are among those who are supporting the proposed centre to be built at Saryu Kunj temple. Yugal Kishore Sharan Shastry, a social activist and senior 'Mahant' of Saryu Kunj temple, has offered his temple to be developed in 'all religion harmony centre' and the model for the proposed structure will be unveiled on December 10 in Ayodhya on International Human Rights Day, Agnivesh said. The Centre will aim at spreading awareness on seven issue--communal harmony, Dalit rights, women empowerment, female infanticide, education, prohibition and economic equality. Sahstry said the proposed seven-storey structure will house a Hindu temple, a mosque, a Buddhist centre, a Gurudwara, a Jain temple, a church and a "religious parliament". "The aim behind this centre to strengthen the 'sanjhi virasat' of Ayodhya and to give a message to those who believe that places of worship of different religions cannot co-exist," Agnivesh said. Meanwhile, a joint delegation comprising members from Hindu and Muslim communities from the twin towns of Ayodhya and Faizabad today met chief priest of Hanuman Garhi-- Mahant Gyan Das and extended their support to his efforts towards resolving the Ayodhya issue. The delegation included former convenor of Babri Masjid Action Committee Munir Ahmad, editor of a urdu daily Aftab Raza and senior litterateur Ram Shankar Tripathi. Mahant Gyan Das and Hashim Ansari, the main plaintiff in Ayodhya title suit case, are spearheading efforts to settle the matter out of court after the pronouncement of verdict by Allahabad High Court. Gyan Das said that he is inviting different sections of society to convince them that "maintaining communal harmony and peace should be a priority and not the temple or mosque issue". Ansari today met Muslim leader Afzal Ahmad Khan and discussed "ways to involve the Muslim masses to support the cause of peaceful negotiations".
