BlackBerry blinks after 2-yr delay; Google, Skype next in line

NEW DELHI: BlackBerry maker RIM on Friday agreed to provide some technical solution, allowing lawful interception of its messenger service, by Monday or Tuesday. The government will, however, take a call only after testing the effectiveness of the solution. Incidentally, this 'new' concession was a commitment made by RIM two years ago. "It should be standard practice for RIM anywhere as they comply in the US under CALEA (Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act 1994)," said Karanvir Singh, CEO of telecom security firm Kommlabs. Meanwhile, Skype and Google could face the Centre's wrath next. The Canada-based RIM, whose representatives including vice-presidentRobert E Crowe met Union home secretaryG K Pillai on Friday, did not budge on the issue of the BlackBerry Enterprise Service (which provides corporate emails), said sources.
