20 killed, several injured in fire at Kolkatas AMRI hospital

KOLKATA: At least 20 people, including uncle of urban development minister Firhad Hakim, were killed and several others injured in a massive fire that broke out at the AMRI hospital in Dhakuria area of south Kolkata early this morning. The patients died of suffocation, fire department officials said. Twenty-five fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Fire services minister Javed Khan, Trinamool Congress chief whip Sovandev Chattopadhyay and police commissionder R K Pachnanda visited the spot. The fire is believed to have had its source in the basement of the hospital at Dhakuria in south Kolkata. The area was engulfed by smoke and relatives of patients are running around the place seeking information. Some of those critically burnt are being removed to other hospitals. Fire department is using two ladders but reaching the burnt patients is still impossible because of limited access. Employees of disaster management department are trying desperately to bring out the patients, and rescue operations have been hampered by anxious relatives of patients. The fire is slowly being brought under control. Chaitali Chatterjee, local councilor, said: We are trying to go indoors. The fire is now under control. Several people are still trapped inside, but many have come out of the hospital.
