Delegation discusses Idukki project with Pawar

New Delhi: A delegation of leaders from Kerala has discussed with Agriculture Minister the problems being faced in implementation of the Rs 765-crore central package for Kuttanad and Idukki regions of the state. The meeting was convened by Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar where problems were identified and solutions were discussed, Rajya Sabha MP from Kerala P J Kurien said. He said some of the schemes could be implemented by expanding the scope of Prime Minister's Gramya Sadak Yojana which Pawar has agreed to take up with the Rural Development Ministry. Kurien also said that since small farmers in the region are not been able to avail subsidised schemes directly, the Centre has agreed to route the subsidy through the state and the grant will also be 100 per cent for a few schemes. In the meeting, Minister of State for Food and Agriculture K V Thomas was also present along with Kerala's Agriculture Minister M Ratnakaran and several MPs. In 2006, the Centre had approved rehabilitation package for the farmers in suicide-prone districts of Kerala. It sanctioned Rs 764.45 crores two years later for implementing various programmes in Idukki and Kuttanad as suggested by the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation.
