Book fair to conclude today

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Thiruvananthapuram Book Fair, organised by the Kerala State Institute of Children’s Literature in connection with the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival, will conclude here on Monday. ‘Galileo,’ a play, will be staged by the Kerala Sasthra Sahitya Parishad on the day. Germany’s Ambassador to India Thomas Matussek will also attend the fair on the concluding day. The 11-day fair, organised in association with the Frankfurt Book Fair at the Suryakanti grounds, was attended by more than 100 publishers from across the country. A German pavilion was also put up by the German Book Office, New Delhi. Screening of French and German films was also held. The highlight of this edition of the fair was a three-day Copyright Table held at Kanakakkunnu Palace. More than 20 publishers took part. On Sunday, architect Benny Kuriakose interacted with students at the ‘Naalekuttam’ programme organised on the sidelines of the fair. Mr. Kuriakose said government agencies should adopt traditional Kerala architecture for constructing buildings under urban planning projects and other government housing schemes. Replying to children’s queries, Mr. Kuriakose said constructing houses was becoming unaffordable as people opted for grandeur and fashion. “Today there are people who import marble and granite from foreign countries to build houses,” he said. Houses with slopped roofs and cross ventilation are best suited for the climate in the State, he said. Mr. Kuriakose is the consultant for the Muziris Heritage Site (MHS) project at Kodungalloor. Animation expert Prakash Murthy also interacted with the students on Sunday. Artisans of Surya Bhavan Arts led a session on making bamboo handicrafts.
