Yamuna Expressway row: Farmers' protest likely to block Delhi roads today

GHAZIABAD/NOIDA: Delhiites who plan to visit central Delhi, late on Friday morning, be better warned. According to the Delhi and Ghaziabad police sources, around 12,000-14,000 farmers are expected to descend near Jantar Mantar, in a bid to protest against the `forceful' acquisition of land for the Yamuna Expressway a dream project of UP chief minister Mayawati. With the ruling congress party expressing its support to the `cause', sources claim a "considerable presence'' of farmers is expected. With the weatherman claiming rain even on Thursday, Delhiites can expect an another day of traffic chaos. "We have received inputs that over 200 vehicles have been booked at rural Ghaziabad alone to enter Delhi on Friday. In addition, several hundred vehicles will be coming from areas like Meerut, Saharanpur, Moradabad and Bijnor. The number of vehicles entering Delhi from Mathura, Aligarh and Agra will be around 450 to 500, on Friday,'' said a senior Ghaziabad police official. UP police sources said special pickets have been set up from Wednesday night at the UP borders including ones at Hodal, Sahibabad, Ghazipur and Loni to stop any "untoward'' incidents and keep one lane of the highways open. Police said they are expecting tractors at the rally and hence, the arrangements. Sources said meetings have been held across western and central UP on Wednesday and movement have begun from the night itself. Meanwhile, joint commissioner of police (traffic) Satyendra Garg has asked Delhiites to avoid the stretch between Ramlila Maidan, Rajghat, Barakhamba Road, Ranjit Singh Marg, Tolstoy Marg, Connaught Place, Mandi House, Daryaganj and Chandni Chowk. "Motorists are advised to follow the directions of the traffic policemen to avoid inconvenience. We will be diverting traffic from 9am till late afternoon depending on the movement of the traffic,'' said Garg.
