Police to take strong action in lottery issue: Kodiyeri

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The police would take stringent action against promoters of lotteries from other states if they were found to be violating rules, Kerala home minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said today. Addressing reporters here, he said the government had taken fresh initiative to prevent violations of the Lottery Act by other-state lotteries. The special team under ADGP Siby Mathews was formed for the purpose, he said. He said steps would be taken to rectify lapses, if any, on the part of the police in taking action against violators of lottery rules. Asked why chief minister V S Achuthanandan had to interfere in the affairs of Home and Finance departments to intensify action against the 'lottery mafia,' Balakrishnan said, "We do not have any complaint about his interference." If required, more officials would be included in the special team to monitor the activities of other state lotteries, he said. To a question on recent police attack on mediapersons in the capital, he said steps had already been taken against officials responsible for the incident. The government would soon form a state level police-press relations committee, he said.
