Assured by AITA, tennis players to play in CWG

New Delhi: The revolt by the top-ranked Indian tennis players ended on an amicable note on Saturday after they were assured by the All India Tennis Association (AITA) that all their dues will be cleared before the Commonwealth Games here in October. Earlier on Friday, Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, Rohan Bopanna and Somdev Devvarman had threatened to pull out of the Delhi Games over non-clearance of their dues. The tennis players had written a letter to AITA asking it to pay their pending dues before the Games of face a pull-out. However, the players signed a statement with the AITA saying that they will not skip the prestigious event as they have been assured by the Association that all their dues will be settled before October. According to the players, AITA had not cleared the due amount to the players since 2006 Asian Games and asked it to at least pay some part of the outstanding amount. Except for a minimal payment to Bhupathi, no player had received a single penny for their CWG preparations. AITA Secretary General Anil Khanna, who had on Thursday denied any such development of a possible boycott, on Friday admitted to it and said talks with the Sports Ministry were on and the matter will be resolved within a week. Khanna had a meeting with the Sports Ministry officials on Friday but did not divulge the details. However he said that progress has been made on the issue and that all the players will be available for the Games.
