Narasimhan to look after Andhra Pradesh NEW DELHI: President Pratibha Patil on Sunday accepted the resignation of Andhra Pradesh Governor Narayan Dutt Tiwari. He quit his post on Saturday following a TV exposé by a Telugu channel wherein he was allegedly shown in a compromising position with three women in the Raj Bhavan. Ms. Patil has asked Chhatisgarh Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan to discharge the function of the Andhra Pradesh Governor in addition to his own duties till a new Governor is announced, a Rashtrapati Bhavan communiqué said. Mr. Narasimhan will be sworn in by Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice on Monday. Former IPS officer Informed sources said Mr. Narasimhan was specially selected by the Centre. It was felt that his service would be of immense help to the State government, which is struggling to deal with agitations relating to the Telangana issue, as he is a former IPS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre and also a former Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB). Though the Opposition parties and women groups demanded the resignation 86-year-old Mr. Tiwari following the TV exposé, as he had “brought disrepute to the high constitutional office he is holding,” a Raj Bhavan press release said he had resigned on “health grounds.” Mr. Tiwari denied the charge and described the news story as “a tissue of lies.” Sixty-three-year-old Mr. Narasimhan, who retired from the IB on December 31, 2006, completed graduation in physics from the Madras University. Thereafter, he completed his post-graduation in Political Science with Gold medal. He also did LLB from the same university. Alumnus of defence college He joined the IPS in 1968 and was allotted the Andhra Pradesh cadre. He had also served in the Ministry of External Affairs and was First Secretary in the Indian Embassy in Moscow from 1981-84. He is an alumnus of the National Defence College, New Delhi. Back |
