Top Dawood aide Iqbal Mirchi held in London

NEW DELHI: Memon Iqbal Mohammed alias Iqbal Mirchi, underworld don Dawood Ibrahims close aide and an accused in the 1993 serial bomb attacks on Mumbai who is ranked among the top 50 drug barons of the world, was arrested by London Police on Tuesday for a local offence in the UK. The 61-year-old Mirchi is wanted by Mumbai Police in connection with a number of narcotic drugs-related cases and also for his alleged role in the 1993 serial blasts. An Interpol Red Corner Notice (RCN) has been pending against him since 1994. Interpol has confirmed his arrest in London. He is currently being questioned there. India will contact UK authorities through diplomatic channels and try for his extradition, said an official here. Mirchi was earlier arrested in London in 1995 by Scotland Yard on drug terrorism charges but India could not get him extradited as charges against him were later dropped. Since then, he has been reportedly living in London and Dubai and running a global drug syndicate. Mirchi spent 15 years in UK A UN report has identified Iqbal Mirchi, who was arrested in the UK on Tuesday for a local offence, as a senior figure in the D (Dawood) company, a worldwide organized crime syndicate with terror links. Iqbal Memon alias Iqbal Merchant alias Iqbal Mirchi got Mirchi as his nickname as his family has traditionally been in the chilli and spice business. He has reportedly been in the drugs trade since 1980.
