Team Anna disappointed with Rahul Gandhis Lokpal speech

NEW DELHI: Congress scion Rahul Gandhi may have described making Lokpal a constitutional authority as a game changing idea but Team Anna found the speech disappointing. Activist Medha Patkar, who is part of Anna Hazares core group, said instead of talking about the broad issue, the Congress general secretary should have deliberated on the immediate issues raised by the Gandhian. Todays urgency and concerns for lakhs and lakhs of people have not been addressed, she said. She was also troubled by the fact that if Rahuls speech was setting the agenda, then it would mean a prolonged process in Parliament. The ideas he has given are new and not been discussed in public. This will diffuse the movement and prolong any decision that Parliament must make regarding Lokpal, Patkar said. Another Team Anna member Kiran Bedi said, The country is impatient for action and implementation and not a mere well-intentioned long plan on issues pending since independence. You climb hills before you reach Mt Everest. Lokpal is a tall hill which will take you to Everest. Begin and prove the intention. On Rahuls observation that Lokpal alone could not be a substitute for anti-corruption code, former law minister Shanti Bhushan quoted Hazare and said one Lokpal would not eradicate corruption in the country, but it would make a beginning. Bill for Lokpal does not clash with the constitutional body which Rahul Gandhi is suggesting. It can function even as a constitutional body, he said. Prashant Bhushan said the idea was good. It requires two-thirds majority to bring a constitutional amendment. We are fine if the Congress wants to pass it but first they should clear the Lokpal bill, he said.
