Asian Games: Rower Bajrang Lal wins second gold for India, first ever in rowing NEW DELHI: India's Bajrang Lal Thakkar created history by clinching the first ever gold in rowing for India in the men's single sculls event on the seventh day of the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China on Friday. The team of Pratima Puhana and Pramila Minz also settled the bronze in the women's pair event of rowing to add another medal in India's kitty. This is the first time Indian women have won a medal in the rowing event. With the addition of a gold and bronze, India's medal tally rose to two gold, seven silver and nine bronze. Starting in lane 3, the Indian Army officer, led the 2000m race right from the start and went on to take gold with a timing of 7:04.78 ahead of Chinese Taipei's Wang Ming Hui (7:07.33), who took the silver while Iraq's Haeider Hamarasheid (7:10.10) won the bronze with a third place finish. Bajrang Lal had also become the first Indian to win a silver medal at the Doha Asian Games in 2006. He had also won the gold medal at the Asian Championships in Korea last year. Indian rowers have been in tremendous form at the Asian Games as they also scripted history on Thursday after settling for two sliver medals in the men's four and men's lightweight four events respectively. The men's four team of Anil Kumar, Saji Thomas, Ranjit Singh and Jenil Krishnan won silver, completing the distance of 2000m in 6:16.79, behind China (6:06.40). Uzbekistan won bronze with a timing of 6:22.70. In the men's lightweight four event final, the Indian quartet of Lokesh Kumar, Manjeet Singh, Rajesh Kumar Yadav and Satish Joshi finished second with a timing of 6:13.32, behind Japan who clocked 6:10.14. Hong Kong won the bronze, clocking 6:14.84. The women's four team of Monalisa Khumanthem, Rameshwori Devi, Tababi Devi and Shruti Kamath, however, disappointed with a fifth place finish clocking 7:08.85. Back |
