Kerala CM writes to Karunanidhi on TN AG's appearance in lottery case

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala chief minister V S Achuthanandan on Friday conveyed to his Tamil Nadu counterpart M Karunanidhi the state's "deep concern and displeasure" over the appearance of Advocate General from the neighbouring state as counsel in the lottery case. In a letter to Karunanidhi, Achuthanandan said the appearance of Tamil Nadu AG P S Raman in the case against the Kerala government's stand on the lottery issue amounted violation of constitutional norms, chief minister's Office sources said. He wanted Karunanidhi to view the conduct of Raman seriously and examine the matter and the constitutional issues involved. Achuthanandan, in his letter, recalled that Kerala Opposition leader Oommen Chandy had also pointed out that Raman had earlier appeared for a leading lottery promoter against Tamil Nadu government. If this was true, it meant that the lawyer had acted against the interests of both the states, he said. Achuthanand's letter to Karunanidhi came in the wake of the state cabinet deciding on Wednesday o take up the issue with the neighbour. Raman had appeared in the Kerala high court on Monday last for Megha distributors after Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi, who earlier represented the dealer, withdrew following strong protests from the Congress in the state.
