Kerala bids tearful adieu to K.M. Mathew

Kottayam: The mortal remains of Malayala Manorama Chief Editor K.M. Mathew was laid to rest at the Puthenpally cemetery here with full state honours in the presence of thousands of mourners from all walks of life. The funeral rites held at Puthenpally in Kottayam was led by Baselios Marthoma Didymos I. Union Minister Vayalar Ravi, Opposition leader Oommen Chandy, ministers P.K.Gurudasan, S.Sharma, N.K.Premachandran, K.P. Rajendran, P.K. Sreemathi, DGP Jacob Punnoose, CPI leaders K.E. Ismail, Pannian Raveendran, NSS General Secretary P.K.Narayana Panicker, SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Nateshan paid their tributes at the residence of Shri Mathew. Secretary A. Ajayakumar laid the floral tributes on behalf of Kerala Governor R.S. Gavai. Swami Purnamritananda Puri laid the wreath on the behalf of Mata Amritananda Mayi Mutt. The prayers at the Kanjikkuzhi residence were led by Abraham Mar Seraphin and Fr T.J.Joshua. The mortal remains of Shri K.M. Mathew was brought to the headquarters of Malayala Manorama at Kottayam to enable the public pay their homage. The body which was kept for the public to pay homage was taken to the church cemetry in a procession. The shops in the funeral procession route - K.K.Road, Good Sheperd Road, Shastri Rd, Seematti Round, Baker Jn, CMS College Jn downed their shutters as a mark of respect to the departed soul. K.M. Mathew, a doyen of Indian media industry and the guiding light of Malyala Manorama, passed away at his residence here Sunday morning. Condolences poured in from all over the country on the demise of Mathew, who was a towering figure known for his professionalism. A recipient of Padma Bhushan and several other coveted honours, Mathew steered Malayala Manorama into a major media house in the country with multiple editions. Monday saw people from all walks of life paying homage to K.M. Mathew. Political leaders, cultural personalities, captains of industry and people from all strata of life visited the residence of Mathew and the office of the Malayala Manorama to pay their last respects.
