Nitish gave cycles, I'll give mobikes to kids: Lalu

MADHEPURA: During his chief ministership, Bihar had no roads to speak of; it had a network of potholes. Today, after five years of Nitish Kumar's tenure, during which the CM has implemented a popular scheme of bicycles for schoolchildren, Lalu Prasad is promising them motorcycles if voted to office. Not surprisingly, Lalu didn't seem bothered about the strain his fiscally reckless promise might impose on the state's finances. Addressing an election meeting at Bihariganj in Madhepura district on Thursday, the RJD boss said: ``Instead of bicycles, motorcycles would be given to schoolchildren if the RJD-LJP combine is voted to power.'' Nitish responded to Lalu's pledge in laconic style, ``What will Lalu do if students ask for petrol? He'll tell them to sell off the motorcycle!'' Nitish Kumar's bicycle scheme has been on for the last three years, with girls and boys in remote areas using it to their advantage. Lashing out at Nitish, Lalu said: ``Woh logon ko thagne ka kam kiya hai (Nitish has cheated people). Nitish's claim about development is false.'' The RJD chief reminded people of the development work done in this region during his tenure as railway minister. He asserted that the railway electric locomotive manufacturing factory at Madhepura was sanctioned after completing all necessary formalities. ``Once it becomes functional, people will get jobs there,'' he said, adding, ``It would stop migration of locals to other states in search of jobs.'' Lalu also reminded people of the relief work carried out by him in this region during the 2008 flood. After delimitation, the erstwhile Udakishunganj assembly segment was rechristened as Bihariganj. Prabhash Kumar (RJD), Renu Kumari Kushwaha (JD-U) and Ranjeet Ranjan (Congress) are among the 15 candidates contesting from here.
