CAG report may weaken Sheila Dikshits hold on power

NEW DELHI: CAGs indictment of the Sheila Dikshit government on multiple counts for diverse acts of omission and commission marks a blow to the veteran chief minister serving her third term. The indictments have undercut Dikshits principal strength: Her reputation for efficiency and integrity. The twin factors were the reason why she survived the challenges of tough elections, powerful rebels as well as sullenness of the leadership over her unilateral ways. The CAG has dented the armour, leaving her vulnerable to her main political rival, the BJP, as well as the possibility of renewed opposition from within. The auditors critical remarks could not have come at a worse time. Already reeling under popular disgust over corruption during its stint, Congress is under pressure to walk the extra mile to correct the perception that it has been indulgent to political graft. Congress on Friday withheld its comment on the CAG report, saying it needed to go through the contents and that the auditors findings had to be vetted by Parliaments Public Accounts Committee. Party sources, however, acknowledged that Dikshit has a challenge ahead. Significantly, they distinguished CAGs observations about the PMOs role in the preparations for Commonwealth Games from the comments it had made about Delhi government. They emphasized that unlike the Delhi government, PMO was not criticized for alleged financial irregularities.
