Enemy within? Purohit wanted RSS leader Indresh Kumar dead

NEW DELHI: A section within the Hindu fringe group behind the series of blasts across India was deeply suspicious of senior RSS leader Indresh Kumar, who allegedly played a key role in those violent actions, and they had wanted to eliminate him. Kumar is under the scanner for his possible links to the blasts in Mecca Masjid, Malegaon, Ajmer and Samjhauta Express. Sources familiar with investigations into right-wing terror acts said from the very initial interrogation of Lt Col Srikant Purohit and others, it was clear that there were deep divisions within the fringe group. Though Kumar was an important player behind the series of bomb blasts, "he wasn't acceptable to many within the group", an investigator said. He said Purohit told them Dr R P Singh, a Delhi-based endocrinologist and a key member of this group, had told him that Kumar and one Subedar Singh, based in Nepal, were both ISI agents and were involved in the fake Indian currency racket. "He (Purohit) seemed convinced about this claim," a source involved in investigating the fringe group's activities said. According to details with the agencies, Dr Singh asked Purohit to arrange for a pistol to murder Kumar. Faridabad-based Shankaracharya Dayanand Pandey, who was arrested in connection with the 2008 Malegaon blast, had introduced Purohit to Dr Singh. Purohit has confessed to arranging the small arm for Kumar's possible murder. The Army officer contacted Rakesh Dhawade, who runs a museum on arms and ammunition in Pune, and asked him to arrange weapons. Dhawade was paid Rs 50,000 for arranging a 9mm locally manufactured revolver and a dozen 9mm rounds. Purohit told his interrogators that he gave the revolver to one Alok in Bhopal, and the rounds were delivered to Alok by one Sudhakar Chaturvedi at the shankaracharya's ashram in Faridabad in May 2008. Purohit also told his interrogators about the shankaracharya demanding another four small arms and necessary ammunition. Rajasthan ATS is set to summon Kumar to question him in connection with the Ajmer blast case, in the wake of Swami Aseemanand disclosing Kumar's role in the dargah blast. Aseemanand also told his interrogators that he suspected that Sunil Joshi, an RSS pracharak who played an important role in all the bomb blasts by the group, was murdered at Kumar's behest.
