’Games village will be ready by July 31’

New Delhi: On his third visit in as many weeks, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna Tuesday inspected the Commonwealth Games Village and was assured by officials that it would be ready by July 31. Games Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi also accompanied Khanna. "There are certain minor works, which are yet to be finished, but the developers and the contractors promised that they would augment manpower and completing the Village within the stipulated time of July 31," said an official accompanying Khanna. The official said that such big projects usually take up to 40 months, but the Games Village has almost been completed within 24 months. The Village, coming up on the banks of the Yamuna river will have 1,168 apartments for about 8,000 athletes. The Village, constructed by private developer Emaar-MGF, was earlier scheduled to be completed by the first week of June. Its revised cost has been put at Rs.1,038 crore (over $200 million). It earlier received a Rs.700 crore bailout package from the Delhi Development Authority.
