’India an example of bad governance’

New Delhi: The levels of corruption and poverty in India are indicative of the bad governance in the country, Transparency International India (TII) said Monday. "Corruption and poverty are outcomes of bad governance and India is an example of that," said P.S. Bawa, chairman of Transparency International India (TII), the India chapter of Berlin-based Transparency International (TI) at the inaugural ceremony of its Asia Pacific Programme Meeting. India is still one of the five highest bribe payers among 22 countries according to TI’s Bribe Payers Index (BPI). TI programme manager, poverty and development Kulan Amin said: "It is a shame India ranks higher than sub-Saharan Africa on the Global Hunger Index considering it is the world’s largest democracy." The ceremony also had a panel discussion on "Confronting Poverty and Corruption Nexus" with the Tata Group’s resident director Bharat Wakhlu, social activist Harsh Mander, TI’s regional director (Asia Pacific) Pascal Fabie, TI Bangladesh’s executive director Iftekhar Zaman and Bawa as the panellists.
