Even city toppers dont get course, college of choice

NEW DELHI: When Urmi Uppal emerged as a Delhi topper in commerce in this years class XII CBSE exams, she thought she had scored enough to walk into the college and course of her choice. But the first DU cutoffs have proved her wrong. Urmi and another joint-topper in commerce, Vishal Dewan, both with overall 97.6% marks, have failed to get admission in the college and course they wanted. I wanted Economics (H) in Shri Ram College of Commerce, but I am not eligible as per the cutoff for students from commerce, Urmi said. I do qualify for BCom (H) in the college but that is not what I want. The Economics cutoff for commerce students at SRCC is 98.25%. Which means Vishal Dewan, who too wanted to take up Economics at the college, has had to look elsewhere as well. He has now opted for BCom (H) at SRCC. It is unfair that students from other streams have an advantage when applying for economics. We have studied hard as well but the cutoffs are such that they expect a phenomenal score from commerce students, said Vishal. Urmi and Vishal are among dozens of very high scorers to face disappointment due to the absurdly high cutoffs at DU. Mohit Gupta, with a best-of-four score of 95.75% in commerce, was heartbroken to find he had missed getting admission in BCom at SRCC by a single mark.
